Project/Protocol Title in lay terms: College Student Development
Principal Investigator: Students of Psychology 2710: Research In Developmental Psychology
Responsible Faculty Member: Samuel Putnam
You are encouraged to ask any questions at any time about this research study and its procedures or about your rights as a subject.
The purpose of this research study is to investigate the way in which college students develop over the course of four years, including aspects of their traits (for example, their tendencies to become frustrated or distracted) and behaviors (for example, their internet and music listening habits).
Because of the sensitive nature of some questions, we have taken steps to make your responses anonymous. Nowhere on the data collection site will we ask for your name. Rather, to track your participation in order to enter you into the raffle for cash and other prizes (see below), you will be directed to a separate site upon completion of the survey. The researchers will have no way of connecting the responses you give on the Qualtrics survey to your name.
You will complete an online questionnaire of approximately 250 questions regarding your behavior or feelings. While we ask that you take our study seriously and answer all questions to the best of your knowledge, if you feel uncomfortable with any questions you are not required to answer them.
You will be in this research study for approximately thirty to fifty minutes.
It is expected that approximately 800 people will take part in this research study.
Participation in this research is voluntary. You have the right to choose not to proceed any further. If you decide not to check the box below indicating you have read this form, you may not participate in this research study. You have the option to stop participating in this research study at any time for any reason. If you choose not to participate in this research study, or choose to withdraw from this research study, there will be no penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.
There may be risks to taking part in any research study. It is possible that some of the questions we ask will be particularly sensitive in nature to you and may make you uncomfortable or possibly distressed. If you feel at any time during or after this study that you would like to speak to a trained professional please contact the Bowdoin Counseling Center. They can be reached at (201) 725- 3069 and are located at 32 College Street.
You will be compensated for your participation in this research study in the following manner:
Once you complete the study, your name will be entered in a raffle for any of a number of cash, gift certificate, and electronic prizes. Please note that the webpage onto which you will enter your name for the raffle is maintained on a system separate from that used to collect your answers to questionnaire items. As such, your responses will remain anonymous, as it will not be possible to connect your identity to your responses to the questions in this survey.
In the unlikely event of injury resulting from your participation in the research, you should immediately notify Samuel Putnam at sputnam@bowdoin.edu or (207) 725-3152. Bowdoin College does not plan to pay you or give you other compensation for any injury. You do not give up your legal rights by signing this form.
The results of this research study may be published. No reference will be made in oral or written reports linking you to the study unless you specifically give written permission.
If you have questions about the study, or need to report any study-related problems, please contact Samuel Putnam at sputnam@bowdoin.edu or (207) 725-3152. The investigator(s) will do everything possible to prevent or reduce discomfort and risk, but it is not possible to predict everything that might occur. If you have unexpected discomfort or think something unusual or unexpected is occurring you should contact the investigator.
For questions or concerns about your rights as a research participant, please contact the Bowdoin Institutional Review Board Coordinator, Jean Harrison, at (207) 725-3217 or at IRB@bowdoin.edu.
